CONFERENCE — “ΑΓΚΩΝ – Ankón, the Dorian City. The Name, the Port, and the Memory of a Greek City”

There is a name that preserves a history, a geography, and a symbol.

On Saturday, 13 June 2026, at 11:00 a.m., in the G. Fuà Lecture Hall of the Faculty of Economics and Business in Ancona, Prof. Haris Koudounas (Campus HETG – Geneva) will guide us on a fascinating journey into the origins of the Dorian city with the conference:

"ΑΓΚΩΝ – Ankón, the Dorian City. The Name, the Port, and the Memory of a Greek City"

Few people know that the Greek name Αγκών (Ankón) literally means “elbow”. This is not merely a linguistic curiosity: the ancient Greek settlers chose this name after observing the distinctive shape of the promontory protecting Ancona’s natural harbour, which bends towards the sea just like an arm at the elbow.

Yet the symbolism extends beyond geography.

In Greek culture, the elbow represents the point of action, strength, and connection between thought and gesture. Thus, Ankón becomes a metaphor for a city that unites East and West, sea and land, memory and future: a place of encounter, exchange, and civilisation.

The conference will offer a historical, linguistic, and symbolic interpretation of Ancona’s identity, rediscovering its profound Hellenic roots and the cultural value they continue to convey today.
